This view of a forge and its equipment includes an anvil in the foreground, its conical horn pointing to the left. Beyond is the silhouette of a figure, and large round outlines which appear to be the wheels of a cart or carriage standing outside the building. There is a view from the opposite direction on folio 4 recto (D08288). As noted under folio 8 recto (D08295), the studies may relate to the painting A Country Blacksmith Disputing upon the Price of Iron, and the Price Charged to the Butcher for Shoeing his Poney, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1807 (Tate N00478).1
