D08306
Turner Bequest CXXII 14a
Pen and ink on white wove paper, 112 x 69 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pen and ink (see main catalogue entry)

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With the page turned vertically, the following sum of pounds, shillings and pence runs from the top:
            3393 9 3
            4406 8 10
            1600
            9399
There is some ink offsetting from a sum on folio 15 recto opposite (D08307, datable to c.1813–14), to which the figures here relate, although it is unclear whether ‘3393’ here should read ‘3353’, the seemingly correct figure with the same shillings and pence following it which is given as a total in a sum on the recto (D08305). ‘3393’ is also the figure given on D08307.
The figure for Navy stocks, £4406 eight shillings and ten pence, appears again on folios 12 verso, 13 recto and verso and 14 recto (D08302–D08305) and in the Hastings sketchbook (Tate D07670; Turner Bequest CXI 49). ‘1600’ also occurs on folios 8 verso and 13 verso (D08296, D08304). For more on Turner’s finances as set out in the extensive notes in this sketchbook, see the Introduction.
