With the page turned horizontally, the view is from the north, over the small bridge which also appears on folio 96 recto (D09322), looking across Stonehouse Lake to Stonehouse Bridge, with the ramparts of Plymouth Dock (later Devonport) rising on the right. Silhouetted beyond is St George’s Church, destroyed in World War II,1 and in the distance towards the left is the Plymouth Hoe and the coast down the east side of Plymouth Sound beyond. The lake has since been filled in and the extensive rebuilding and trees lining Kings Road, which now runs down to Stonehouse Bridge, make it difficult to obtain an equivalent view today. There is a similar drawing on folio 98 recto (D09324).
The subjects as far as folio 127 recto (D09358) are all identified or presumed sites within a few miles in and around Plymouth, suggesting a series of fairly short excursions.
