Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 253 Verso:
Burgh Island from the Mainland 1813
D09432
Turner Bequest CXXXI 164a
Pencil on white wove paper, 95 x 157 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The sketches between folios 260 verso (D09446; CXXXI 171a) and here show Burgh Island, just off the coast at Bigbury-on-Sea, as discussed under D09446. With the page turned horizontally, the slight outline here shows its profile looking south-west from the mainland at Bigbury-on-Sea; the view is now dominated by the art deco hotel set on the hillside above the island’s shore.
