As part of unpublished Turner research informed by local knowledge, Dr Bernard Richards has confirmed this subject, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, as the spire of St Thomas’s Church from the road towards Brierley Hill,1 looking north-east along the High Street up the hill from Queen’s Cross. On the right may be the entrance to King Street, but only the general topography and the church spire remain unchanged. There is a related study on folio 45 verso (D22408).
For other views of Dudley, see under folio 39 recto (D22395).
