As part of unpublished Turner research informed by local knowledge, Dr Bernard Richards1 confirmed this as a view, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, of the ruined keep Dudley Castle from the wooded slopes below (now occupied by Dudley Zoo), looking south-west to the spire of St Thomas’s Church. The view continues a little way on folio 55 recto opposite (D22427), with the ruins of Dudley Priory at the foot of the hill; the main view on that page shows a similar prospect.
There are variations on this view on folios 55 verso–56 recto and 56 verso (D22428–D22430). For other views of Dudley, see under folio 39 recto (D22395).
