The view is north up the valley of the River Tame towards Tamworth Castle and St Editha’s Church. In the foreground are the arches of the aqueduct carrying the Coventry Canal over the river near Fazeley; the canal turns north on the right and on under the bridge in the middle distance, which also survives. Peelers Way now runs between the river and the canal, and the valley is obscure by trees. The aqueduct is seen in the distance on folio 53 verso (D22074; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 52a), and a similar view on folio 55 recto opposite (D22077; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 54).
For Turner’s England and Wales watercolour and other views of Tamworth, see under folio 52 verso (D22072; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 51c). Another drawing showing a canal aqueduct is the view of Warwick on folio 58 verso (D22084; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 56a).
