Drawn with the page turned vertically, there are three registers of sketches here. The top one shows the outer face of the Sharington Range of Dudley Castle, seen from below with the North Gate at the centre; the view is now partly obscured by trees across a pool in Dudley Zoo, which surrounds the castle ruins. There are other views of the outside of the Sharington Range in the contemporary Birmingham and Coventry sketchbook (Tate D22400, D22401; Turner Bequest CCXL 41a, 42).
The middle and lower registers views are effectively continuous, showing the castle’s inner courtyard from inside the North Gate. Above is the inner face of the Sharington Range, which is carried on below to the foot of the keep. The buildings remain in much the same state today, apart from the loss of the upper storey of the bay windows Turner shows at the left of the upper section. There is a view of the keep from outside the North Gate on folio 69 recto opposite (D22105; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 67).
