The viewpoint is south of Dudley Castle’s ruined barbican gateway, with the keep above to the left. The gap between them is rather greater in reality. Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the main view continues a little way left onto folio 72 recto opposite (D22111; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 70), where the keep’s north-west tower is shown. The main drawing there is a view in the opposite direction, looking south over the town from the same spot. There is an oblique view of the barbican in the contemporary Birmingham and Coventry sketchbook (Tate D22403; Turner Bequest CCXL 43).
At the top right is a small separate study of the north-west tower from the other side; there is a similar thumbnail study of it on folio 62 recto (D22091; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 60).
