In the upper drawing, made inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the keep of Shrewsbury Castle is shown on the right, with the tower at the southern end of the fortifications on the left. The church spires of St Mary the Virgin and St Alkmund are seen beyond to the west. The viewpoint is probably along The Dana above the River Severn. The railway now runs across below the castle, which is partly obscured by trees, with the town’s station just to the right. In the distance on the left is the English Bridge (since obscured by the railway bridge), which is carried over briefly to folio 72 recto (D22281; Turner Bequest CCXXXIX 71). Below is a detail of the curtain wall.
