Turner’s inscription is not readily legible against the darkened leather cover. The title of the sketchbook is carefully written in the style of the varied fonts of the title page of a book or print portfolio, with ‘Studies’ in bold, rounded letters, ‘near’ in smaller regular letters, and ‘Brighton’ in steep italics. The ends of the last two words appear to have been largely rubbed away over time.
