This study, like those on folios 8 verso and 9 recto (D01133, D01134; Turner Bequest XXXVII 16, 17), is for a group in the foreground of an oil painting, Fishermen coming ashore at Sun Set, previous to a Gale (the ‘Mildmay Seapiece’), exhibited in 1797 and long untraced, but known from a plate in the Liber Studiorum.1
