Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the composition continues across folio 53 recto opposite (D01224; Turner Bequest XXXVII 107). This and the following studies on folios 53 verso–56 verso (D01225–D01231; Turner Bequest XXXVII 108–114) were all presumably made at Margate. They are similar in approach and technique to the contemporary series of loose sheets showing fishing and other vessels, addressed in a separate subgroup of the present section of this catalogue.
