Joseph Mallord William Turner A Man Walking, Seen from Behind 1796-7

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 57 Recto:
A Man Walking, Seen from Behind 1796–7
D01232
Turner Bequest XXXVII 115
Pencil on blue laid wrapping paper prepared with a red-brown wash, 93 x 113 mm
Stamped in black ‘XXXVII – 115’ bottom left, descending vertically

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Made with the page turned horizontally, this very slight note of a figure (Finberg recorded the page as ‘Blank’) is on a scale small in relation to the page size so that it has the appearance of being situated in a large space, perhaps the beach at Margate where the scenes on adjacent pages are apparently set.
