The subject is drawn with the page turned horizontally. Turner made two general views of Richmond in North Yorkshire on this tour: the present drawing, and one in the Tweed and Lakes sketchbook (Tate D01012; Turner Bequest XXXV 9). The viewpoint here is on the opposite side of the River Swale.
