This drawing, with the page turned horizontally, must have been made in the course of Turner’s excursion from Keswick to Longthwaite Bridge; see folio 31 recto (D01023; Turner Bequest XXXV 21). Grange Fell rises from Borrowdale south of Lodore, and affords views along the whole length of the lake to Keswick at its northern end, with the mass of Skiddaw, 931 metres (3054 feet) high, dominating the whole region. Turner’s next stopping-point as he proceeded south up the valley was at Castle Crag, which he drew on D01023.
Technical notes:
The page is slightly discoloured from exposure when on display, apart from the edges formerly protected by a mount. The corners at the gutter have been torn away and repaired.

Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram; inscribed in a later hand in pencil ‘79’.
