This rough sketch is similar to two others depicting the Géronstère spring at Spa, Belgium (Tate D28077, D28079; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 18 a, 19 a). Turner here has very loosely mapped out the basic configuration of the landscape: the hillside and tall trees which canopy a building at the site. The artist produced a gouache, pen and ink and watercolour drawing of the spring on blue paper (Tate D24745; Turner Bequest CCLIX 180).
