This slight sketch shows Beilstein taken from a different angle from those views on the folio opposite (Tate D28320; Turner Bequest CCLXXXIX 15a). The Burg Metternich’s keep, outer bailey, round tower and residential and side buildings can be seen built into the steep slate cliff overlooking the village below. St Joseph’s Church and Carmelite Monastery is directly below; Turner has made a quick jotting of its spire above and to the left has inscribed ‘Jos’, a shortening of ‘Joseph’.
