Rendered swiftly with loose and fluid line, Turner took this view of Oxford from Headington Hill. The dome of Gibbs’s Radcliffe Camera (1737–49) can be seen at centre right followed by the spire of the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, the Gothic twin towers of Hawksmoor’s All Souls College, and the Magdalen College tower towards the left. The lower left part of the drawing continues onto the folio opposite (Tate D28325; Turner Bequest CCLXXXIX 18).
