Here Turner depicts Bernkastel from the Moselle, looking back at the village from further downstream. The Gothic Church of St Michael with its celebrated spire and turrets is at centre and in the distance, at left, are the ruins of the Burg Landshut (see Tate D28406; Turner Bequest CCXC 28a). On the far right is the hospital at Kues, above the group of figures. This sketch and that on folio 30 recto (Tate D28409; Turner Bequest CCXC 30) formed the basis of a gouache, pen and ink, and watercolour drawing of c.1839 (private collection).1
