The principal sketch is drawn looking down the Moselle towards Bernkastel and the ruins of the Landshut from the hill immediately to the south. Kues is suggested summarily on the left with Bernkastel on the right bank, identifiable by the spire of St Michael’s Church. Turner developed this sketch into a gouache and watercolour drawing on blue paper (private collection).1.
A detail of the Landshut is beneath, orientated inversely, at bottom right.
