Framed by valley hillsides, Turner depicts the medieval Church of Our Lady (Pfarrkirche Liebfrauen), ‘said to be one of the most finished and beautiful specimens of the decorated style of Gothic architecture to be found on the Rhine’, according to Quin.1 The spire of the church appears in the following folio (Tate D28469; Turner Bequest CCXC 60). Amongst the buildings roughly sketched around the Liebfrauenkirche are the turrets belonging to Oberwesel’s defensive walls.
