Turner pictures Mainz at centre, a view taken from downstream on the Rhine. The Cathedral of St Martin, the dome of Saint Stephen’s and the spire of Saint Peter’s Church are all in view. Above and below the prospect of Mainz are separate sketches of houses and boats, Turner inscribing the words ‘Flusbad’ (‘river pool’) and ‘white moles’ (a type of pier or jetty usually constructed of stone) around them. The jotting at the upper register also inscribed ‘moles’ is a continuation of the pontoon bridge depicted on Tate D28489; Turner Bequest CCXC 70.
