Here Turner records a prospect of the Burg Rheinstein, a fourteenth-century castle built into a gradient on the Rhine gorge near the town of Trechtingshausen. The feudal lords of the castle were the Electors and Archbishops of Mainz until Prince Frederick of Prussia (1794–1863) purchased Rheinstein in 1823. The Burg Reichenstein and Saint Clement’s Chapel are seen beyond it, on the banks of the river. Turner has also made small sketches of the Rhine valley and some of the buildings he encountered above the principal view.
