Here Turner shows the Enderttor city gate at Cochem, from a northerly axis. An easterly view is depicted on the folio opposite (Tate D28541; Turner Bequest CCXCI 2a). The Alte Thorschenke tavern, popular with travellers arriving to Cochem by stagecoach, is adjacent to the gate and identifiable by its round gable. In light and cursory line Turner has jotted the profile of the Reichsburg or Cochem Castle in the distance.
The Enderttor and Alte Thorschenke is the subject of a gouache and watercolour drawing on blue paper (Tate D24806; Turner Bequest CCLIX 241) intended as the companion piece to that of St Martin’s Church, Cochem (Tate D20253; Turner Bequest CCXXI T).
Technical notes:
The leather loop on the inside front cover has stained the sheet.
