Here Turner represents the Moselle town of Klotten, from a slightly different angle to Tate D28550; Turner Bequest CCXCI 7a. The Burg Coraidelstein is recorded from a closer perspective, perched on a precipitous cliff. The Parish Church of St Maximin is visible at left, situated slightly upstream.
This view formed the basis of a gouache and watercolour drawing on blue paper entitled Klotten and Burg Coraidelstein from the East (Tate D29029; Turner Bequest CCXCII 78). Turner produced a sketch of the two landmarks taken from a westerly perspective (Tate D28550; Turner Bequest CCXCI 7 a), also later transformed into an evocative gouache drawing (Tate D20237; Turner Bequest CCXXI D).
