In this swiftly executed sketch Turner represents the Moselle valley moments downstream from Müden. The megalith seen at centre is the Druidenstein or Druid’s Stone, a rock usually associated with Druidic practices and rituals (see also Tate D28314; Turner Bequest CCLXXXIX 12 a in the First Mossel and Oxford sketchbook). The valley slope that frames the Druidenstein to the left is marked ‘V’ by Turner to show that vineyards grow there. As it was in Turner’s time, winemaking remains one of the region’s most thriving economies. See also Tate D28559; Turner Bequest CCXCI 12.
