Turner ‘toiled up the steep hillside north of the town across the Alkenerbachtal’ in order to take this inland view of the hills and rooftops of Alken.1 The Michaelskapelle and Wiltberg House are also shown here (see Tate D28574; Turner Bequest CCXCI 19a).
