Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
?Riverside Terrain c.1833
D40104
White chalk on blue paper, 139 x 194 mm
Stamped in black with the Turner Bequest monogram and ‘CCXXII – F’ bottom left
Inscribed in pencil ‘501’ bottom left and ‘CCXXII’ bottom right
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This drawing was not recorded by Finberg in his Turner Bequest Inventory. Very faint white chalk marks are apparent across the centre of this sheet although they are too light to identify a subject with certainty. Nonetheless, a pair of arches towards the bottom right-hand corner may suggest a bridge traversing a river.
Technical notes:
The verso of this sheet is catalogued under the entry for Tate D20265 (Turner Bequest CCXXII F). There are small smudges of blue and red paint towards the top left-hand corner.
