Drawn with the page turned horizontally, this is one of a sequence of twelve drawings of Malmesbury in this book; see under folio 2 recto (D01252; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 3).
Having been removed for display in the National Gallery’s First Loan Collection, the sheet became misplaced as well as badly discoloured; listing it as page 74 of the book, Finberg noted that it ‘should be p. 4a’.1

The paper is discoloured from exposure while on display, except where the edges were protected by a mount.

Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘Sir Richard Colt Hoare Bart’ and ‘Malmesbury’, to which has been added another hand in pencil ‘?’; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram below ‘XXXVIII – 74’; inscribed by A.J. Finberg in red ink ‘p.74 “Hereford Court” sketch book .’ For Sir Richard Colt Hoare’s commission see the note to folio 3 recto (D01253; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 4).
