There is a small sketch of buildings in the lower right corner. The mark to the left of this, which is transcribed here as ‘4’ but may perhaps be ‘H’, has affinities with the firmly added inscription in the lower right corner of the drawing on D01655 (Turner Bequest XLI 24) in this sketchbook. Both are views of towns on the River Usk. A more developed drawing of the town of Usk, from a slightly closer viewpoint, is on D01668 (Turner Bequest XLI 35). Another watercolour study of Usk, perhaps based on the latter and the present drawing is Tate D01906 (Turner Bequest XLIV d).
Technical notes:
The paper is different from that comprising the rest of the sketchbook; it is faded from exposure.
Verso:
Inscribed in a later hand in pencil ‘No3’; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
