J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled much this page with descriptions of the ruins of Château Gaillard, perched on its steep eminence some one hundred metres above the Seine. A sketch from a low vantage of the ruined twelfth-century fortress disappears off the top of the page. The scratchy marks at the bottom of the page form the lower half of a comparable scene which continues over onto folio 46 recto opposite (D23971; Turner Bequest CCLIV 46).

Of all the Seine valley sights, Château Gaillard and the local villages of Les Andelys were the subject of particular study in this sketchbook.
