With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner worked long vistas of riverside terrain across the top half of this page. Particular attention has been paid to the punctuation of the landscape by distant buildings and clusters of sail-boats. Inverted in relation to the sketchbook as foliated, a more cursory view of a similar nature runs down the left-hand side of the page. Populous rolling hills of this type abound along the Normandy banks of the Seine and were the subject of extensive study in this volume.
