With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner recorded the view from atop the Cap de la Hève in Normandy on this page. Clearly depicted on the brow of the hill are the two lighthouses used to guide ships headed for the nearby port of Le Havre. Sketches recording the architectural details of these structures appear in the Guernsey sketchbook which were probably drawn on the same tour; see Tate D23601 (Turner Bequest CCLII 44). For watercolours of Cap de la Hève that Turner worked up with a view to engraved reproduction around this time, see Tate D24566 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 1), D24567 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 2), D24645 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 80), D24701 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 136). A list of pages in the sketchbook featuring Le Havre and Cap de la Hève is provided in the entry for folio 48 recto (D23975; Turner Bequest CCLIV 48).
