In this slight sketch, the subject may be a view in the neighbourhood of Salisbury. Alternatively, it may have been noted while Turner was working at Fonthill for William Beckford 1799: the general layout of this composition, with an isolated upright feature on a distant ridge, the view flanked by trees grouped at the extreme edges of the sheet, is similar to that of several in the series of finished views of Fonthill that he executed in 1799–1800, for example East View of the Gothic Abbey (Noon) (National Trust for Scotland, Brodick Castle, Isle of Arran)1 and North-East View of the Gothic Abbey (Sunset) (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester).2
