This is one of six studies made at Schaffhausen in the Fonthill sketchbook; the others are D02206–D02208, D02229 and D02230 (Turner Bequest XLVII 29, 30, 31, 52, 53). With the page turned horizontally, Turner’s viewpoint here is close to that of another drawing (Tate D04876; Turner Bequest LXXIX B) made on the same visit, and he seems to have used both in developing a finished watercolour of 1831–2 (Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery).1
