Drawing from a point on the Quai de Meuse, here Turner pictures the city of Namur in panorama. The view extends onto the folio opposite (Tate D20105; Turner Bequest CCXVII 13). Namur’s fortress crowns the rocky heights at centre, dominating the city at the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre Rivers. On this page, the ancient stone bridge called the Pont de Jambes can be seen, spanning the Meuse between Jambes on the left bank and the lower reaches of the citadel complex.
