Turner arrived at the Belgian city of Liège on 13 August. Drawing from the banks of the Meuse, he records a river barge laden with cargo and manned by two sailors. In the background the striking onion dome of St Andrew’s Church can be seen at left. Turner pictured the city elsewhere in this sketchbook (Tate D19598, D19636–D19638, D20061–D20064; Turner Bequest CCXVI 24, 43a–44a, 260a–262) and in the Huy and Dinant sketchbook of 1824 (Tate D20095–D20099, D20105; Turner Bequest Turner Bequest CCXVII 8–10, 13). See also Turner’s 1825 panoramic study of the churches of Liège (Tate D19446–D19447; Turner Bequest CCXV 25a–26) and his later studies from the 1839 tour (Tate D28066, D28070–D28074, D28076; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 13, 15–17).
