Here Turner records the Meuse as it meanders through the countryside surrounding Liège; the view is the same as that shown on folio 21 verso (Tate D19593; Turner Bequest CCXVI 21a) but here taken from further away. Above, the artist has made a study of the sky and its cloud forms, taking note of the ‘V[ery] Blue’ and ‘[?Livid] Red’ light he saw.
For views of Liège taken in Huy and Dinant sketchbook of 1824, see Tate D20095–D20099, D20105; Turner Bequest Turner Bequest CCXVII 8–10, 13.
