Set against precipitous limestone cliffs, the abbey at Flône is shown here in five swiftly rendered views. Founded in 1075, the abbey was reconstructed in the seventeenth century into the building we see in the present drawing. From a vantage point on his boat, Turner records various aspects of the abbey including the tour d’angle (Junction Tower), the convent, and Church of Saint-Matthieu. For more drawings of Flône see Tate D19620, D19621, D19642, D20086; Turner Bequest CCXVI 35, 35a, 46a, CCXVII 2.
