Employing loose and swift line, here Turner depicts the meandering Meuse and hills near Fumay in the French Ardennes. The artist has inscribed ‘slates’ within the lowermost sketch, as he had done in the previous folio (Tate D19675; Turner Bequest CCXVI 63). Cecilia Powell has suggested that the rear view may be a distant prospect of Fumay.
