Drawing from a high vantage point on the hillsides of Pallien, Turner pictures a wide meander of the Moselle encircling the city of Trier in a loop at left. Grassy islets protrude from the centre of the river, and beyond, the Roman Bridge can be seen spanning its east and west banks. Trier’s cathedral and the Martinskloster are rendered in cursory profile, while the village of Pallien is shown in clearer line, with the Church of Saints Simon and Jude at centre (see also Tate D19727, D19731; Turner Bequest CCXVI 89a, 91a). For other sketches of Trier in this book, see Tate D19725–D19726, D19728–D19730, D19732–D19743; Turner Bequest CCXVI 88a–89, 90–91, 92–97a.
