Turner took this distant view of Trier from a vantage point high in the hills above Pallien. The village’s Church of Saints Simon and Jude can be seen at bottom left, identified by its teardrop-shaped spire, as well as Napoleon’s sandstone bridge (see Tate D19734; Turner Bequest CCXVI 93). Beyond, the Roman Bridge and Trier’s cathedral is suggested in summary profile. For further sketches of the city see Tate D19725–D19733, D19736–D19743; Turner Bequest CCXVI 88a–92a, 94–97a.
