At the upper and lowermost registers Turner pictures two of Trier’s ancient Roman ruins: the Kaiserthermen or Imperial Baths (see D19739–D19740; Turner Bequest CCXVI 95a–96) and at rear, orientated inversely relative to the foliation, the Porta Nigra viewed from a distance (see also Tate D20142, D20230, D28431; Turner Bequest CCXVII 4, CCXX W, CCXC 41). At centre is the profile of the towers and spires of the cathedral and the Liebfrauenkirche, with the Church of St Paulinus in the background. For further sketches of the city see Tate D19725–D19738, D19741–D19743; Turner Bequest CCXVI 88a–95, 96a–97a.
