Contrary to Finberg’s original catalogue title for this drawing, ‘Ruined castle on rock, probably Beilstein’, Cecilia Powell has discovered that Turner here records the mighty fortress of Ehrenbreitstein at Koblenz, Germany. More sketches of the citadel can be found on Tate D19818–D19821, D19826–D19830; Turner Bequest CCXVI 134–135a, 138–140.
