Here Turner fills the page with an array of cursory and swiftly executed studies of a group of locals by a river or canal, a horse-drawn cart, boats, a man fishing, and a river barge laden with cargo. The location may be the Flemish cities of Bruges or Ghent. Similar sketches are found on the folio opposite (Tate D19885–D19886; Turner Bequest CCXVI 167–167a).
