This previously unidentified sketch is in fact a view of Abbeville taken from its outskirts. The profiles of Saint-Vulfran Church, the Belfry, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre are visible, as is a windmill at right. Turner produced another version of the same prospect in the sketches Tate D20116–D20117; CCXVII 22–23 which are located in the Huy and Dinant sketchbook. This larger book was particularly appropriate for horizontal format landscape views and was used by the artist at the beginning of the 1824 tour and at Abbeville, towards the end of his itinerary.
