The identification of the view as a scene on the Wye is not confirmed.
Technical notes:
In this unfinished study Turner experiments freely with the technique of stopping-out: once the pigment had been removed by means of a brush loaded with clean water, and the paper blotted, further colour could be added in the areas rendered blank. This procedure was to be an important feature of his work in watercolour the following decade.

Blank; inscribed by a later hand in pencil ‘16’; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
