With the sketchbook turned vertically, Turner worked a rapid drawing of hilly terrain towards the top of this page. The long lines that descend from right to left terminate in scratchy pencil passages, suggesting settlements nestled at the base of large hills. Such landscapes can be found on both the Channel Island coasts and on the Normandy banks of the Seine, both of which feature prominently in this sketchbook.
