Inverted in relation to the sketchbook as foliated, the drawing on the top half of this page depicts Villequier on the Normandy banks of the Seine from a southerly vantage. Ships’ masts cluster around the shoreline while the surrounding hills shelter the sixteenth-century spire of the Church of Saint-Martin.1 On the bottom half of the page is a second view of the same subject taken a little to the east. For Turner’s watercolour of Villequier of around this date, see Tate D24669 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 104).
